I'm a fierce advocate for health literacy and embrace every opportunity to teach providers about how to use clear communications -- written and visual -- to enhance patient truth and compliance. I'm dedicated to educating providers about the value of understanding sociological nuance. Like most people engaged with healthcare, I have a personal story that includes a life-threatening illness at age 20 and fibromyalgia diagnosed in 1986. Thanks to these situations and everything that went into their diagnosis and treatment, I've had many adventures with representatives of every sector of the healthcare industry. My presentations about being an empowered, engaged patient focus on how that definition has changed over the years for me personally and in the healthcare environment writ large. Presentations about being a caregiver and caring for caregivers are grounded in long-time experience as a personal aide to someone with quadriplegia, as well as hospice experience. My views are also anchored in a sociological perspective supported by qualitative and quantitative data. Sociology plus personal experience informs my counsel about engaging patients and families as medical status changes. Last but not least, the distinction between healing and curing, the value of spiritual practices, and the impact of faith on wellness is something healthcare providers are often reluctant to discuss for a variety of reasons. I'm known for creating a safe space to talk intelligently about the intersection of health and faith. The title of my book, Deliberate Acts of Kindness: Service as a Spiritual Practice (Doubleday) conveys my perspective. I am a sociologist by training (PhD, New York University), adult educator by experience, former PR agency executive, the published author of eight books, and content curator-developer.

An early adopter of social media, I claim bragging rights to being in the top tier of those with healthcare social media expertise in North America. I've been involved with online health communities since 1993. I serve on the External Advisory Board of the Mayo Clinic Center for Social Media (#MCCSM) as well the team developing the MCCSM Social Media Residency program and faculty delivering it. I also serve on the Marketing Advisory Council for the Healthcare Chaplaincy Organization. Member: Society of Participatory Medicine.
