Offering: Learn more Arlene Salamendra is a former Board Member and Staff Coordinator for Families Advocating Injury Reduction (FAIR), an Illinois organization committed to developing and building public support for policies that promote : better quality health care, safer consumer products, and safety in the workplace. A number of years ago, Arlene was the subject of a preventable medical error. Since that time, she has devoted a portion of her time to rectifying the systems errors that lead to preventable medical errors. Arlene is a former founding member of the Patient and Family Advisory Council at the National Patient Safety Foundation. She is a founding member of TMIT Patient Advocate Team. She is also member of Consumers Advancing Patient Safety (CAPS) and a World Health Organization (WHO) champion. Arlene is also a committee member of the World Patient Safety Day, an annual event observed on July 25th in memory of those who have been injured or have died from medical errors. She is a co- recipient of the Pete Conrad Patient Safety Excellence Award presented by the astronaut's wife, Nancy Conrad and TMIT. She is the author of papers on patient safety and a contributor to the National Quality Forum Safe Practices. Her patient safety work has been cited in Patient Advocacy for Health Care Quality (Earp, French & Gilkey, 2007). Arlene has presented to health care providers, as well as speaking to medical students on the impact of medical errors on patients and their families.
