As a Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, Cancer Survivor, Healthcare Entrepreneur, Husband and Father to two beautiful boys, I have a wide array of experiences, successes and disappointments with our current healthcare system. As a Nurse and Nurse Practitioner, I have had many powerful patient and family interactions, made numerous observations and learned lots of lessons from years of acute care, home care and public health nursing. As a Cancer Survivor, I understand being marginalized, heard, supported and finally treated for a very rare amelanotic melanoma in my 30's while attending Yale University's Nursing School. As a Healthcare Entrepreneur, I have made a mission of assessing the healthcare system, identifying areas needing improvement, understanding the complex workforce dynamics and tirelessly working to improve patient outcomes and safety- while striving to impact the safety and availability of healthcare providers. As a Husband, I have experienced the healthcare struggles of a woman in the healthcare system, birth control risks, interaction with specialists, high-risk pregnancy, pre-mature delivery, post-operative difficulties, powerlessness of patients and their advocates, and had the terrifying experience of having to call a "code" on my wife in the acute care setting to prevent her death. I have also experienced the joy of a trouble free pregnancy, a perfectly planned and executed delivery of a full-term child, and the immediate bonding of my son with his mother- ONLY to have him needlessly separated from his mother and kept in an ICU for a week over the objections of myself, his mother and his attending physician due to tightly stretched caregivers, an archaic reimbursement system and generic, one size fits all, hospital policies. I am fiercely patient centric, supportive of professional providers and family caregivers, and a proponent of individualized, personalized healthcare. My presentation style is narrative, enthusiastic, informative and memorable. Thank you.
