Since it was established in 1973, the National Speakers Association's strength has sprung from its Founder Cavett Robert, CSP, CPAE. His love, encouragement, generosity, and wisdom embody the spirit of NSA today and continue to guide the Association as it grows in number and diversity. While 30 years have brought NSA approximately 3,500 members, three annual meetings and 38 chapters, we continually look back to the man who is responsible for it all, Cavett.
We can never forget where our inspiration came from. That is why we have incorporated a little bit of Cavett in everything we do and everything we have created at NSA - from our Member Handbook, to our mission statement, Code of Ethics, conventions, workshops, and Professional Expert Groups (PEGS).
Humility, generosity, and teamwork are just a few of the qualities Cavett possessed, and in fine professional-speaking style, expressed so eloquently. Cavett once said to NSA Past President Jim Cathcart, CSP, CPAE, "You guys have done so much more with this (NSA) than I ever imagined." The truth was that NSA members have simply built upon the legacy that he humbly established for us.
NSA Foundation- dedicated to helping professional speakers in need through grants and scholarships, reflects the generous nature of our founder. "It's amazing how much people can do when they divorce themselves from concern over who gets the credit," Cavett was known to say.
Likewise, Cavett displayed an uncanny ability to inspire others and share his wisdom and expertise. "A desire to help others is our most noble attribute; it gives immortal momentum to life and is our only certain path to heaven," he would say. Hence, the Cavett Award, the highest award bestowed by NSA, was created to celebrate and honor those members whose careers demonstrate the spirit of sharing, guiding and inspiring other professional speakers.
Whether you're a new member or a longtime friend of NSA, don't forget about the man who made it all happen; carry the spirit of Cavett with you into your professional speaking career. In his words, "Our great pilgrimage of life is a journey to make dreams come true, translate our ambitions into realities, and bring our hopes and our plans to fruition."
